Fix Your Homepage in 3 Simple Steps

Your homepage is the first place search engines, AI, and real humans see most of the time.

It needs to tell them three things simply and clearly. (Again, we are keeping it simple and getting the basics done FIRST).

So let’s get started.

Notice how clear this homepage is. Boring copy - sure but I make up for that with images. This copy gets the job done, and this website will be excellent for the search engines and AI, which means it will show up more often in search.

  1. Make It Clear What You Do and Who It’s For

At the top of your homepage, write copy that clearly explains what you do and who it’s for.

Write one clear line:

  • what you do

  • who it’s for

(I’ll remind you here again that your location always matters! Read this post for more on why location matters.)

Examples:

Family photographer for busy parents in Ottawa

SEO and copywriting support for small business owners

Business mentor for sensitive and neurodivergent entrepreneurs

Notice it is clear what I (used to) offer and who it is for (soulful entrepreneurs). That copy is re-inforced by “Let do-it-yourself go” - but let’s talk about that later. For now - the basics are covered here. (except location).

2. Add Your Location to Your Homepage

Write your location on your homepage so search engines can connect your website to a place.

Add it to your copy, footer, or contact section. I know I write this a lot in my content - but it is the #1 thing people miss.

Examples:

Based in Wakefield, Quebec

Serving clients in the Ottawa–Gatineau region

Working with clients online across Canada

This is a contact page. Be sure to put your location on your homepage, your footer, your contact page - so your viewer (and search engines and AI) will have no doubt where you are located.

3. Write a Clear Homepage Description

Write a short description for your homepage. You have 70-155 characters to get this done.

This is the text that shows up in search results.

Write one or two sentences that include:

  • what you do

  • who it’s for

  • where you are

Examples:

SEO and copywriting support for small business owners in Ottawa–Gatineau

Family photography in Wakefield, Quebec for families who want relaxed, outdoor sessions

Business mentoring for neurodivergent entrepreneurs, based in Quebec and working online

BONUS: 4. Write a Clear Homepage Title (this is your site title)

Write a clear title for your homepage. (This is not the same as your description)

This is your site title. It shows at the top of your browser and in search results. It is another way to give search engines and AI clear information about your website.

Write a short line that includes:

  • what you do

  • where you are

Keep it simple and specific.

Examples:

Family Photographer in Wakefield, Quebec

SEO and Copywriting for Small Business | Ottawa

Business Mentor for Neurodivergent Entrepreneurs | Quebec

If you don’t know how to change your site title, your page descriptions, etc., please use Google search. Most websites now have excellent instructions, or AI can provide step-by-step guidance so you can navigate your website and get this important work done.

If working with a real human, one-on-one, is for you, I might be who you are looking for. I specialize in working with highly sensitive and neurodivergent business owners who want more clients - so contact me or take the quiz (which will also contact me) and let’s get you some clients!
